Australian and UK ring sizes are identical
Worth settling first, because it is the question most people arrive with: Australian and British ring sizes are the same system, not two similar ones. Australia and New Zealand both use the British A to Z letter scale, so an Australian N is a UK N with no conversion in between.
That means any UK sizing chart, UK ring sizer or UK jeweller’s measurement can be used in Australia as it stands. If you have already been sized in London or Dublin, that letter is your Australian size too.
Coming from a US size
The conversion you do need is from the American number to the letter. A US 6 is about an AU L½, a US 7 is an AU N½, and a US 8 is about an AU P½. Australian sizes use halves in the same way British ones do.
Australian retailers occasionally list both a letter and a US number for international customers. If the two disagree on a listing, trust the millimetre measurement if one is given, since that is the only figure that cannot be rounded twice.
Ordering from overseas
Buying from a US site is common in Australia, and it is where sizing mistakes get expensive. Returning a ring internationally costs far more than getting the size right, and many jewellers will not resize a ring bought elsewhere.
Measure in the evening when your fingers are at their largest, and allow for the fact that Australian summers make fingers swell noticeably. If you are between sizes, take the larger one and have a local jeweller bring it in later. Sizing down a plain band is straightforward work for any Australian jeweller.
